7/8/2023 0 Comments The code breaker doudnaBy taking a holistic look at what got Doudna, and one of her friends and co-researchers, onto the virtual stage for the 2020 Nobel Prize ceremony, Isaacson uncovers and demystifies the stigma around high level thinking and biologic research in “The Code Breaker.”īy walking through the life of a character, the beginning of the too-short 500 page biography feels like many of Isaacson’s other incredible stories. Following her discovery of the CRISPR-cas9 system of possible gene editing, her life flew into the center of controversy and cutting-edge science. Doudna, who grew up being told that women can’t involve themselves with science, would become one of America’s greatest thinkers and kindest genetic researchers. “The Code Breaker” details the story of Jennifer Doudna as she embarks on a journey to unravel some of the mysteries of biology. Isaacson’s ’74 most recent biography follows the life of a scientific discovery almost as much as it does the life of one incredible scientist.

Rafe is intrigued both by her beauty and by her utter disgust with the idea of being his bride. Once she has done her duty, he will let her go. She proposes an arrangement: she will agree to the marriage and provide Rafe with his heir and spare. But Serafina knows Rafe’s reputation as a libertine and wants nothing to do with him, either, even if he is devastatingly handsome. Unfortunately, best laid plans go awry when the next in line for the title, her intended’s cousin, Raphael “Rafe” Flynn is forced to take over the engagement. When he suddenly dies, she does not mourn but thrills at the idea that she will be free. A hot historical romance from USA TODAY Bestselling Author Jess Michaels For years Serafina McPhee has been engaged to marry the heir to the Duke of Hartholm and for almost as long, she has been struggling to find a way out of that engagement. Fifty-one had been killed, 183 wounded and 167 suffered frostbite or trench foot. By V-E Day, 625 men had served in its ranks. One infantry company landed in Normandy on August 8 with 187 men and six officers. The 1945 offensive into Germany was a triumph of a citizen army, but the price was high. Ambrose's accounts of the fighting in Normandy, the breakout and the bitter autumn struggles for Aachen and the battles in the Huertgen Forest and around Metz depict an army depending not on generalship but on the courage, skill and adaptability of small-unit commanders and their men. Using interviews and other personal accounts by both German and American participants, Ambrose tells instead the story of enlisted men and junior officers who not only mastered the battlefield but developed emotional resources that endured and transcended the shocks of modern combat. These men are frequently dismissed as winning victories by firepower rather than acknowledged for their individual fighting power. The story of the front-line American combatants who took WWII to the Germans from Normandy to the Elbe River makes, in Ambrose's expert hands, for an outstanding sequel to his D-Day (1994). 7/8/2023 0 Comments The Bad Boy by Emilia RoseWith my head buried in books and the haunting memories of my father’s death, I want nothing more than to end my senior year on a high note, so I can get out of this shitty town. Empathetic without becoming saccharine, A Quiet Life highlights the power of closure and the importance of a connected, compassionate community.” Tender, emotionally powerful, and infused with hope, A Quiet Life explores how grief shapes our choices and shows that no matter how dark the most difficult moments in life can be, our humanity and capacity for forgiveness shine through. The lives of these three individuals intersect in unforeseen ways, as each character bravely presses onward, trying to recover something they have lost. I've been checking some interviews with Clive Barker, one of which where he gets interrogated, cross-examined asked questions on his work, both film and writings, by a bunch of brainwashed simpletons well-adapted and intelligent studio audience. Very clear and definite spoilers for Weaveworld. It's doubly ironic then that the ideas that started the write-up are nowhere to be found. But for the most part, the big ideas are done. Which means it's very much overwrought in some places and woefully inadequate in others but, well, right now I just need an exit from it.ĭoubtless there will be some revision in the future, possible clarifications and so on. It's become too close, and I'm unsure whether I've said enough, though it certainly feels that way. It's about time, because I'm in a state where I'm blithely staring over errors as it's become an inextricable mass of information for me now. Alright, after seemingly endless revising it's time to send this one out into the world. 7/6/2023 0 Comments Witches by Tracy BormanWithin the next decade, there is likely to be a change of monarch, sparking renewed global interest on a scale not seen since Elizabeth II's coronation in 1953. There has never been a more apposite moment to consider the history of this extraordinary survivor. But for much of its history, it also spearheaded seismic change, shaping our religious, political and cultural identity and establishing the British monarchy as the envy of the world. Its unique survival owes much to the fact that, for all its ancient traditions and protocol, the royal family has proved remarkably responsive to change, evolving to reflect the times. It has weathered the storms of rebellion, revolution and war that brought many of Europe's royal families to an abrupt and bloody end. The British monarchy is the one of the most iconic and enduring institutions in the world.
